Your season schedule is made for you
In a team league where two-golfer teams play head to head, Back9Ops makes the whole season's matchups for you. It is a league round robin with byes shared out evenly, and a big league can play in two pools. This article also covers what happens when a team joins mid-season or you turn pools on late.
Quick answer. In a team league where two-golfer teams play head to head, you do not build the schedule. Back9Ops makes the whole season's matchups for you, as a league round robin. Every team plays every other team before anyone plays the same team twice. With an odd number of teams, one team sits out each week, and no team sits out a second time until every team has sat out once. A big league can split into two pools, and each pool plays its own schedule. To turn it on, set the league to Teams, pick 2 players a team, and pick Post the whole season up front.
Who can do this: an Admin. We walked it as an Admin, not as an Organizer. Who can do what in your club has the full list.
Before you start
- You need the league made. Start your league shows how.
- This is for leagues of teams of two. The settings offer two, three or four golfers a team. Only teams of two get a posted season schedule. Leagues of individual players and teams of three or four are grouped one week at a time. We did not walk a league of threes or fours.
The steps
- On the Leagues page, press Edit Settings on your league. For a new league, the same questions are in New League.
- Under League type, pick Teams. Under Players per team, pick 2 players.
- Under Who do players play each week?, pick Post the whole season up front. The page says: "Posting the whole season shows every week's opponent from day one. Tee times and strokes are still posted the night before each week."
- For a big league, open Pool & group settings and tick Divide teams into two pools (Pool A and Pool B).
- Then tick Keep Pool A vs Pool A, Pool B vs Pool B — never mix pools. On our demo league this box was not ticked. The page says why it matters: "Without this, teams from different pools can end up in the same group." Tick it if you want each pool to play its own schedule.
- Set Weeks of play before pool sorting happens and Lock teams into their pools after week #. The page suggests two weeks for the first one. In those early weeks everyone plays everyone. When that week is finished, Back9Ops ranks the teams by their scores in those weeks. The better half goes to Pool A and the rest to Pool B. The weeks after that are planned again inside each pool.
- Press Save Changes. In our walk we stopped before saving. We did not walk this step or anything after it.
- On the league page, press Post Season Matchups, then Post matchups. We did not walk this one, because our demo club has no league of teams of two.
What you should see
On the settings, you should see Teams, 2 players and Post the whole season up front picked. With pools on, the Pool & group settings line sums up your choices, for example "Pool A / Pool B".
After you post, every week on the league page should show its matchups. Weeks with a bye should say so. Golfers should see their opponent for every week on their own league page. We did not walk this one, because our demo club has no league of teams of two.
If it goes wrong
- A team joined or dropped out after the season started. On a league that posts the whole season, adding or removing a team plans the weeks still to play again. The new plan works around the matches already played, and weeks already played keep their results. Look over the coming weeks on the league page afterwards. We did not walk this one.
- You turned pools on after week 3. Turning pools on does not change the matchups already posted. Pools are made only when the week in Lock teams into their pools after week # is finished. If that week is still to come, the pools form then, and the weeks after it are planned again inside each pool. If that week has already been played, Back9Ops does not go back and sort the teams. Put each team in a pool yourself instead. In the team standings, press the team's pool button (it says Unassigned until the team has a pool) and pick a pool. Then press Redo Future Matchups and Yes, redo matchups. Weeks already played keep their results. We did not walk this one.
- Teams from different pools are playing each other. Tick Keep Pool A vs Pool A, Pool B vs Pool B — never mix pools, save, then press Redo Future Matchups. We did not walk this one.
- A team shows Needs Review after the pools form. A team with no scores in the opening weeks cannot be ranked, so it is not put in a pool. Put it in a pool yourself from the team standings, as above. We did not walk this one.
- There is no Post Season Matchups button. Check the settings. The league must be Teams with 2 players a team. Teams of three or four and leagues of individual players are grouped one week at a time. We did not walk this one.
- You would rather post one week at a time. Pick Post one week at a time under Who do players play each week? We did not walk what that changes on the league page.
Director's tip
Post the season before opening night. "Who have we got next week?" is the question you hear most at the bar. Once every golfer can see the whole season, you stop answering it. If you have an odd number of teams, tell the league on night one that every team sits out once before anyone sits out twice. A bye that people know is coming starts no arguments.
