Standings, points and ties

How your league's standings are put in order, how to award points for each finishing place, and the three ways to handle a tie. Use it when a golfer asks why they are where they are.

Quick answer. Open the league and press the Standings tab. In a stroke-play league the tab says "Stroke Play — fewest strokes wins" and lists golfers by total strokes, lowest first. A golfer who has played fewer rounds than the others sits below them, even with fewer strokes. To award points for each finishing place, use the Points Table tab. To choose what happens when two golfers are level, press Edit and change How ties are handled.

Who can do this: an Admin. This was walked as an Admin. We did not walk it as an Organizer. Who can do what in your club has the full list.

Before you start

You need a league with at least one finalized week. A league week, start to finish shows how to finalize one. Standings update when a week is finalized.

The steps

  1. Open the league and press the Standings tab. For a stroke-play league it says "Stroke Play — fewest strokes wins". The columns are #, PLAYER, ROUNDS, HANDICAP, TOTAL STROKES, NET (EST.) and AVG. A line reads "LEAGUE HANDICAP RULE" and, in our league, "League default". Show how this was calculated opens an explanation.

  2. Read the order. Golfers are ranked by total strokes, lowest first. A golfer who has played fewer rounds sits below every golfer who has played them all. On our league, three golfers with four rounds and lower totals (184, 195 and 197 strokes) were listed 14th to 16th, below thirteen golfers with five rounds (193 to 244).

  3. To award points for each finishing place, press the Points Table tab. It is headed "Position Points Table" and says "Award points by finish position. Leave empty to use stroke/Stableford scoring." With nothing set, it says "No points table configured. Click Add Row to set up position-based scoring."

  4. Press Add Row once for each place that earns points. The rows are numbered Place 1, 2, 3 and so on. Type the points under Points Awarded. Each row also has a trash button, titled "Remove row". We did not press it. Press Save Points Table. The page says "Points table saved. Standings will now use position-based scoring."

  5. Go back to the Standings tab. It now says "Position-based points table", and the columns are TOTAL POINTS and AVG PTS. With 10, 7 and 5 points for first, second and third, three golfers showed 10, 7 and 5 points. Golfers without points showed a dash and 0.0.

  6. To go back to strokes, press Clear Table on the Points Table tab. The page says "Points table cleared (3 rows)." and shows an Undo button for a moment.

  7. To choose what happens when golfers are level, press Edit at the top of the league page, find How ties are handled and pick one of three:

    • Allow ties keeps golfers level. The hint says "Keep this simple unless your rules of competition require something else."
    • Break ties with scorecard countback says "Ties are separated by the most recent week's result, then the week before, and so on."
    • Settle ties with a playoff you record says "When players are tied in the standings, you tap who won the playoff on the league's Standings tab."

Press Save Changes. Playoffs and closing the season shows what the playoff card looks like.

What you should see

The Standings tab with your golfers in order, and, once you save a points table, the words "Position-based points table" and the TOTAL POINTS column. Your golfers see the same order on their own league page, where it says, for example, "You are 1st out of 16 players."

If it goes wrong

  • A golfer is ranked below someone with more strokes. That golfer has played fewer rounds. The list puts golfers with fewer rounds below those who played them all. We did not find a setting that changes this.
  • A golfer asks why their points are 0.0. They are on no row of the points table, so they get none. Add a row for each place that should earn points.
  • You cleared the points table by mistake. Press Undo on the bar that appears. We did not time how long it stays. If it is gone, type the rows in again.
  • You picked countback and two golfers are still level. We read the hint, but we did not walk a countback that separated a tie, so we cannot tell you what it does with a tie that nothing separates.
  • The Settle a tie card is missing. It only appears under Settle ties with a playoff you record. Under Allow ties we did not see it.
  • You want to hand golfers a standings page. The league's public page, with the address ending /public, lists the same golfers in the same order. The Standings tab also has Public Link and Export CSV buttons. We did not press either.
  • Stableford leagues, team leagues, and attendance points. We walked a stroke-play league only. We did not walk the others, so we do not say how their standings are ordered.
  • You are an Organizer. We did not walk it as an Organizer.

Director's tip

Pick how ties are handled before the first night of the season, not the night you have a tie. Golfers take it better when the rule was in the book before the round.
