Bring handicaps in from a spreadsheet
Paste a list of names and handicap indexes into the Handicap Manager, look it over, and press one button to save them all. Here is what it matches on, what it leaves out and how to check it worked.
Quick answer. Open the Handicap Manager, press Import CSV, paste your list and press Parse & Preview. The page shows who it found. Press Apply and the handicaps are saved at once, with today's date.
Who can do this: an Admin. This was walked as an Admin. We did not walk it as an Organizer.
Web only. This article covers the web pages. We did not check the phone app.
Before you start
The players have to be on your roster already. This page changes handicaps. It does not add people. A name it cannot find is shown and left out. To add people first, see Bring players in from a spreadsheet.
The steps
- Open the Handicap Manager. On the Players page there is a Handicaps button, with a number beside it when some handicaps are out of date. We read that button in the source and opened the page by its address, so we did not press it. The page is called Handicap Manager.
- Read the boxes at the top. They show ACTIVE PLAYERS, HAVE HANDICAP, MISSING HCP, STALE (>30D) and GHIN #S ON FILE. On our demo roster they read 51, 32, 19, 30 and 0. Beside them are three filters: All, Missing HCP and Stale (>30d).
- Press Import CSV. The box says "Paste CSV or tab-separated text." The columns it knows are LastName, FirstName, GHIN and HandicapIndex. It says "GHIN column is optional. Rows are matched by GHIN # first, then by exact name. Unmatched rows are shown but not imported."
- Paste your list and press Parse & Preview. We pasted four rows. The page said "Preview — 3 matched, 1 unmatched." The table has Status, CSV Row, Matched Player, Current HCP and New HCP. A name match says Name in the Status column. A name it could not find says "Not found in roster" and No match.
- Press Apply. The button counts the matched rows and says "This will save immediately and stamp today's date." Ours said Apply 3 Updates.
- Read the result. The page said "Imported 2 handicaps from CSV." The two players now showed Today under their last update, and the boxes at the top changed: HAVE HANDICAP went from 32 to 34, MISSING HCP from 19 to 17, and GHIN #S ON FILE from 0 to 1. The one GHIN number in our file now counts as on file.
What you should see
The matched players show their new handicap and Today as the date. Anyone you left out keeps whatever they had.
If it goes wrong
- The button said 3 and the page said 2. One of our rows had a handicap of 99.9. The preview showed a dash under New HCP for that row, with no reason, and when we applied it the golfer stayed Not set. We have written this up as a bug. Look for dashes under New HCP before you press Apply.
- "Not found in roster." The name did not match anyone exactly. Fix the spelling in your list, or add the player first.
- The page says it could not detect the columns. Put a header row on the list with LastName, FirstName, GHIN and HandicapIndex. We did not walk this one.
- Two players have the same name. The page matches a GHIN number first and a name second. We did not walk a match by GHIN number, and we did not walk two players with one name.
- I applied the wrong list. The save is immediate, and we saw no undo. The table has a box for each golfer's handicap and a Save All button. We did not press Save All, so we did not walk fixing a number that way.
- My handicap numbers look old. The Stale (>30d) box counted 30 golfers on our roster. We did not press that filter.
Director's tip
Look at the preview table for dashes before you press Apply. A dash means that row will not save, and the page will not tell you why.
