Take team entries for a scramble

One person signs up the whole foursome, then keeps the team's own page. Here is the form, the emails, what the captain can change, and where you see and name the teams.

Quick answer. On a scramble, one person signs up the whole team on the Register Your Team page and gets a private team link by email. That link lets the captain rename the team, fill an open spot or swap a player. You see every team on the Team Setup page and can rename any of them on Name teams.

Who can do this: an Admin. This was walked as an Admin. We did not walk it as an Organizer.

Web only. This article covers the web pages. We did not check the phone app.

Before you start

The event must be a scramble, and registration must be open. On our demo event that meant pressing Open Registration first. Before that, the team page said "Registration is not open yet." See Open sign-ups and share the link.

The steps

What the captain does

  1. Open the event page. A scramble's public page says "Sign up your team" and "This is a team event — one person registers the whole group. No account needed." Below that is Register Your Team.
  2. Fill in the form. It says "Sign up your 2-person team. One person fills this out for the whole group." The first box is Team name (optional), and it adds "Leave blank and we'll name it after the captain." Then comes Captain (you), with First name (required), Last name, Email (so we can reach you) and Phone (optional). Each other player gets the same boxes, marked optional.
  3. Leave players out if needed. The form says "Don't have everyone yet? No problem — leave players blank and add them later."
  4. Press Register Our Team. The page says "Thanks, Gwen! The Fairway Fiddlers is signed up for" the event's name. It also says "Save your team link. It's how you see your team any time — no account needed." There is a Copy link button.
  5. Read the email. The captain gets "Your team is in" and the event's name. It says "Need to see or change anything? Your team page is always here:" and gives the link. Only the captain got an email. The other player, whose address we typed in, got none.

The team page

The link opens a page called Your team. It shows the team name with a pencil, the event, the date and the course, Add to calendar, a Your team is in badge and the players, with "(captain)" beside the captain. At the bottom it says "This private link is your team's page — no account needed. Keep it handy." and, "You can make changes until the event starts."

  • Rename. Press the pencil, type the name, press Save. The page says Your team is now with the new name in quotes.
  • Swap a player. Press Swap beside a player. The page asks "Who's taking" that player's name "spot?" It has First name, Last name, "Email (optional — we'll send them their own link)", Never mind and Make the swap. It then says "Ivy Dorn is in for Hal Wexler." The new player gets an email "You're on" and the team's name, with their own link.
  • Fill an open spot. A team signed up with a blank player shows "Open spot" and Add a player. The form asks "Who's joining the team?" and its button is Add to the team. The page says "Kit Marlow is on the team." With no email address given, nobody was emailed.

What you see

  1. Your Inbox. Each change tells you. We saw "Team renamed", "Substitution" ("Ivy Dorn replaced Hal Wexler on Fiddlers on the Green") and "Team change" ("Kit Marlow joined Kessler … (added through the team's manage link)").
  2. Team Setup. On the event page, press Teams. The page is called "Team Setup" and names the format, such as "2-Person Scramble". Each team shows "2 players", Ready, its golfers with their handicaps and a Team handicap. Under "Not on a team yet" it says "Everyone is on a team." The page also has Withdraw team and Delete team. For how teams score, see How a scramble scores.
  3. Name teams. On Team Setup press Name teams. The page is "Name Teams" and says "Give each team a name people will recognise." Type over a name. The counter reads "1 of 4 changed". Press Save names, and the page says "Saved. 1 team renamed." Reset to suggestions and Undo my edits are beside it.

What you should see

After a team signs up it is on Team Setup with Ready. On the event's public page it is in the list of teams, with its golfers' names. A team whose players have no handicap shows "—" beside each name, and Team handicap showed 0. Add handicaps on the Players page.

If it goes wrong

  • A golfer opens the team page and sees "Event Not Found". The page then says "This team event doesn't exist or the link may be incorrect." We saw this on a stroke play event. Only a scramble uses the team form. We did not walk best ball or Chapman. The source says those golfers sign up one at a time and you build the teams.
  • "Registration is not open yet." The event is still a draft. Press Open Registration.
  • I pressed Open Registration and my golfers got an email. The four golfers already on our demo field each got "Registration is open". Open registration last, once the field is the way you want it.
  • The captain says nobody told the other player. That is right. Only the captain is emailed when a team signs up. A golfer who is swapped in gets their own email.
  • A golfer who was swapped out got two "Your spot is cancelled" emails. We saw this in our walk, for a player who never got a "you're on the team" email in the first place. We have written it up as a bug. Tell them yourself if it matters.
  • The captain says the page told them to contact the organizer. The page after sign-up says "Need to add or change a player? Contact the organizer — they can update your team anytime." The team page lets the captain do it, so point them at their team link.
  • A team has a name nobody chose. With the name left blank, our walk gave "Jon Kessler's Team" on the page after sign-up, "Kessler" on the team page, then "Kessler/Marlow" once a second player joined. Rename it on Name teams.
  • A paid event, a full event and a closed deadline. We did not walk any of these on a team sign-up.
  • A single golfer signs up on the one-person page. That page also opened on our scramble. We did not submit it.

Director's tip

Tell captains to save the team link from the email before anything else. It is the one page where they can fix a no-show themselves, and every fix lands in your Inbox.

Still stuck?

Email support@back9ops.com and tell us the event's name, the team's name and what the page says.
