How a scramble scores
It is a scramble, so the first job is the teams. Here is how to build them, what team handicap the app gives each one, and why the team with the higher gross can still win.
Quick answer. In a scramble the team plays as one. Every team puts in one score for every hole, and that is the only score the board uses. You build the teams on the Team Setup page, the app works out each team's handicap, and the leaderboard ranks the teams. It opens on Net, which is the team's score after its team handicap. Press Gross to see the raw scores.
Who can do this: an Admin builds the teams. An Organizer can run the rest of the day, but Team Setup says "Access denied" to an Organizer, so the Admin does the teams first.
Before you start
Make the event with Scramble as the format, pick the tees, and have the players in the field. Set up your event in four steps and Build the field the night before cover those. Pick a Handicap setting too, on Event settings. Full (100%) gives teams their full team handicap and Scratch gives them none. Stroke play: gross and net explains that setting.
The steps
- Open Team Setup. On the event page, press Manage Teams. A small number on the button tells you how many golfers still need a team. Once every golfer is on a team the button turns into a Teams set chip with an Edit link beside it. The Teams step in the strip across the top opens the same page. The page is called Team Setup and says "A team is the players who share one score."
- Choose how to build the teams. The page asks "How should we build the teams?" and gives three tiles. Pair them for me — even handicaps says "Lowest handicap with highest, so pairs come out even." Pair them for me — random draw says "Shuffle the field. Fast and fair." I'll pick the teams myself says "Tap 2 names, then they become a team."
- Check the team size. Under Teams of: tap the size you want. A two-person scramble offers only 2. The most you can choose is the Players per team you picked when you made the event. You can change Players per team on Event settings until the first team is built. After that the page says "Teams are already built, so the size is fixed. Clear the teams on Team Setup to change it."
- Look over the draw. If you asked the app to pair them, a card called "Here's what we came up with" shows the teams, each with its Team handicap, and a Not saved yet badge. Press Use these 2 teams to keep them, where the number is however many teams the draw made. Press Try again for another draw, or Cancel. The page says "2 teams created." and offers Undo.
- Or pick by hand. Tap golfers' names in the Not on a team yet list. A bar at the bottom says how many you have picked, such as "1 player picked", with a grey Pick at least 2 players button and Start over, which clears your picks. The team is made the moment you tap the last golfer it needs, so a two-person team takes two taps. The page says "Team Delgado/Hendricks created." and offers Undo. Teams are named from the golfers' last names. If fewer golfers are left than the team size, pick them and press Make team.
- Read the team handicap. Each team card shows Team handicap, with the players, Ready, Withdraw team and Delete team. When everyone is on a team the list says "Everyone is on a team." For a two-person team, the app takes 35% of the lower handicap and 15% of the higher one, applies your Handicap setting, and rounds once. You do not work it out.
- Keep going. The bottom of the page asks "Teams look right?" and offers Next: set tee times → Pairings.
- Score the day. Open scoring as in How scoring works on game day. On Enter Scores, the page says "Each team enters one shared score per hole." There is one row for each team, not one for each golfer.
- Watch the board. Press View Leaderboard. The columns are the place, the TEAM, THRU, NET, the plus or minus against par, GROSS and HCP (the team handicap). Open the Scramble format box on the board for the one-line rule: each team records one score per hole, and the lowest team score wins.
What you should see
On our practice scramble, Rick Delgado and Bob Hendricks had a team handicap of 7. Dave Prentiss and Susan Tillman had a team handicap of 5. Delgado/Hendricks posted a gross 72 and Prentiss/Tillman posted a gross 71. On Gross, Prentiss/Tillman lead by one stroke. On Net, Delgado/Hendricks are first at 65, which is 7 under par, and Prentiss/Tillman are second at 66, 6 under. The team with the higher gross wins on net because its team handicap is two strokes bigger.
Change Handicap to Scratch and the board shows gross only. There is no Net and no HCP, so Prentiss/Tillman lead at 71 against 72.
If it goes wrong
- Team Setup says access denied. Your role is Organizer. Ask the Admin of your club to build the teams, then carry on from Pairings.
- A golfer is missing from the draw. They are not in the field yet. Add them first, then build the teams. Build the field the night before shows how.
- The "Pair them for me" teams look unfair. Press Try again for another draw, or use I'll pick the teams myself.
- A team has to drop out. On its card press Withdraw team. The page says "Team Delgado/Hendricks withdrawn." and offers Undo. The card is marked Withdrawn and offers Put team back in. If you made a team by mistake, press Delete team. The page says "Team Delgado/Hendricks deleted." and offers Undo.
- The page says "2 players are not on a team yet. They won't be scored." A team was deleted or a golfer was added. Tap the two names to make a team, or press Pair the rest for me.
- You want to see each golfer's own score. A scramble has one score per team, so the board has no individual scores to show. Players who want theirs can keep it on paper.
- The team handicap looks off. It follows the Handicap setting on Event settings. At Scratch there is no net at all.
Director's tip
Print the team names on the tee sheet and say them out loud at the rules talk. Nobody argues about a draw when they heard the pairings read out.
