Map your greens for yardages

Mark the front, center and back of each green on a satellite map, once, so golfers see distances to the green while they play. Here is how to open the map, mark a green and save it.

Quick answer. Open your course from Courses, press Map Greens (GPS), pick a hole, choose Front, Center or Back, and tap that spot on the satellite map. Press Save greens. The page says you only need Center to start, and that golfers then get distances to the green while they play. You map a course once.

Who can do this: an Admin or an Organizer of the club. This was walked as an Admin. We did not walk it as an Organizer, and we did not look at what a golfer sees on the course.

Before you start

The course must already be in your club's list. If it is not, add your course, tees and holes first.

Have a rough idea where each green sits. The map is a satellite picture, so you can see the greens, but a quick look at your own scorecard saves a wrong tap on the wrong fairway.

The steps

  1. Open the course. Press Courses in the left menu. On your course's row press Manage.
  2. Press Map Greens (GPS). It is one of the buttons at the top of the course's page. The next page is called Map greens, with a link back to your course's name at the top left.
  3. Find your course on the map. If the map is not already on your course, type the course's name or its address into the box that says "Find course or address on the map…" and press Find. Zoom with the + and − buttons.
  4. Pick a hole. The numbers 1 to 18 sit under the map. The map's caption says which hole and which spot you are setting, such as "Tapping the map sets the center of Hole 1".
  5. Pick the spot. Under SETTING: press Front, Center or Back. Center is the one that matters most. The page says you only need it to start.
  6. Tap the green. One tap places the pin. Under the numbers, the hole's own line shows Front:, Center: and Back:, with a dash for each spot you have not set and the word "set" for each one you have. A clear link appears beside a spot that is set. The page says you can drag a pin to fine-tune it.
  7. Go on to the next hole. Press its number and repeat.
  8. Press Save greens. The button stays grey until you change something. While you have unsaved work the page says Unsaved changes. After you save it says Saved!

What you should see

The page is headed Map Greens (GPS) with the line: "Pick a hole, choose Front, Center, or Back, then tap the green on the satellite map." After a tap the hole's Center: says "set" instead of a dash and Save greens turns on. After you save, Saved! shows next to the button. Back on the course's page, the GPS Yardages box keeps count of how many greens are mapped and offers Continue mapping until every hole is done.

In our walk we marked the center of hole 1, saved it, then cleared that spot and saved again, so the demo course was left as it started.

If it goes wrong

  • Save greens is grey. Nothing has changed since you opened the page or since the last save. Tap a green and it turns on.
  • You tapped the wrong place. Press clear beside that spot and tap again, or drag the pin.
  • You set the wrong spot, such as Front instead of Center. Look at the caption under the map before every tap. It names the hole and the spot.
  • You are not sure it saved. Look for Saved! beside the button. While Unsaved changes is showing, press Save greens.
  • The map is on the wrong place. Use the Find box with your course's name or address, then zoom in.

Director's tip

This one is our advice, not a rule of the app. Do the Center of every green first and save, then come back for Front and Back when you have a quiet hour. Saving as you go keeps an interrupted session from costing you the holes you finished.
