Your inbox: messages from your club and your events
Where the messages from your club and your events land, how to open one, and what Mark read, Dismiss and Mark all read do.
Quick answer. Press Inbox in the bar at the bottom of your screen. Every message your club or your events have sent you is there, newest first. Press a message to open it. Press the button under it, such as View Event, to go to the event.
Who can do this: any golfer who is signed in.
Before you start
You need to be signed in. Signing in, and what to do if you cannot covers that. We walked this page on a phone-sized screen. We did not walk anything in the phone app.
The steps
- Open the Inbox. In the bar at the bottom, press Inbox. The page is headed "Inbox". If you have messages you have not read, a badge beside the heading counts them, for example "26 unread".
- Pick a tab. There are four: All, Unread, Events and Leagues. All shows everything. Unread shows only the ones you have not read. Events and Leagues show the messages filed under that kind.
- Read the list. Each message is a card with its subject, the first lines of the message, a small label for the kind of message (we saw EVENT and ADMIN) and how long ago it came, such as "just now", "21h ago" or "1d ago".
- Open a message. Press the card. It opens to show the whole message. Under it there can be a button that goes to the thing it is about. We saw View Event on a "Registration is open" message and View League on a "Pairings posted" message. The page marks a message read when you open it. We did not walk that one, because every message in our test inbox was already read when we opened one. We read it from the page's source.
- Mark one read. Each card that is unread has a small check button, Mark read. Press it. The badge drops by one, for example from "26 unread" to "25 unread".
- Get rid of one. Each card has a small Dismiss button, an X. Press it and the card is gone. We reloaded the page and it stayed gone.
- Clear the badge. At the top, Mark all read marks every message read. The badge and the Mark all read button both disappear. Then the Unread tab says "You're all caught up" and "No unread notifications."
- Change what you get. At the bottom of the page is a link, Manage notification preferences. It goes to your profile. We did not open that page, so we cannot say what is on it.
On a phone, Mark read and Dismiss are always on the card. On a computer the page's styling hides them until the mouse is over the card or you Tab onto it. We saw the phone behaviour. We did not walk a real mouse or the Tab key, so the computer behaviour is read from the page's styling.
What you should see
A message your club sends to you with both the email and the inbox turned on shows in two places. In your inbox it sits at the top, labelled ADMIN and "just now". In your email there is a message with the same subject, a greeting with your name ("Hi" and your name), the message, and a line that says "Questions? Contact your club administrator directly."
If it goes wrong
- The Inbox says "Nothing here yet". We saw that on the Leagues tab, with "Notifications will appear here when operators message you or your events update." under it. A tab says it when that tab has nothing in it, and it can be the tab and not the whole inbox. Press All to look at everything.
- A message is not on the tab you expected. A message is shown under Events or Leagues only when it is filed under that kind. In our demo club a "Pairings posted for Week 4" message about a league was filed as EVENT, so it was on the Events tab and the Leagues tab said "Nothing here yet". Use All when you are looking for a message.
- You got the email and there is nothing in the Inbox. Whoever sends a message picks where it goes. The sender's screen offers "Email only", "Player Inbox only" and several mixes. We sent one with "Email + Player Inbox", and it came to both. We did not send an email-only message, so we cannot say for sure that it never reaches the inbox. Ask the club to send it again to the inbox.
- You dismissed a message by mistake. We reloaded after pressing Dismiss and the card did not come back. We did not find a way to bring it back. Ask the club to send it again.
- The message shows a long web address. Some messages have the address of an event in their text, such as an event's leaderboard address. You do not need it. Open the message and press the button under it.
- You cannot see the check and X buttons on a computer. Move the mouse over the card. That comes from the page's styling. We did not walk it with a real mouse.
Director's tip
This one is our advice, not a rule of the app. When a message matters, send it to the email and the inbox together. On the page where you choose how a message goes, the option "Email + Player Inbox" says "Most reliable for web users". The email reaches a golfer who never opens the app. The inbox is where they find it again later. Send a message to your field shows the steps.
