Put the leaderboard on the TV
A big board for the clubhouse wall. Here is how to open the TV view, what it shows and how it flips through a big field, how to put a message on it, and which formats it leaves to the app.
Quick answer. The TV view is a full-screen board with big type, made to be read from across a room. Press TV View on the leaderboard and it opens in a new tab. It needs no sign-in. It shows the ranked field and flips to the next page of golfers every ten seconds. A big field also gets a ticker along the bottom. It only shows. Nobody can change a score from it.
Who can do this: anyone with the event link can open the TV view. An Admin or an Organizer can post a message that shows on it.
Before you start
Have a computer that can reach the TV, and have the event made and open for scoring, as in Set up your event in four steps. The TV view shows whatever the leaderboard shows, so you do not set anything up for it. A Draft or a cancelled event has no board to show.
The steps
- Open the TV view. On the event page press View Leaderboard, then press TV View. Once the event is started, the event page also has a TV View button beside View Leaderboard. Either one opens the board in a new tab.
- Put it on the screen. Send that tab to the TV, or open the same address on the clubhouse computer. The address is the leaderboard address with
/tvon the end. It needs no sign-in, so any computer will do. Use your browser's full-screen mode if you want the edges gone. - Read the top right. A LIVE badge means the event is started and the board keeps itself up to date. A FINAL badge means the event is closed and these are the final scores. An event that has not started shows no badge.
- Read the board. The columns are #, Player (or Team), Thru and a score column that says To Par. On a Stableford board that last column says Points. A handicapped event for single golfers also shows Gross and Net, and an event with several rounds shows R1, R2 and so on. Thru shows how many holes a golfer has finished and shows F once they are done. A withdrawn golfer shows WD. When two golfers share a place it shows T2, as on the leaderboard. If the field is more than one page, a small label by the title reads, for example, "1–12 of 16".
- Let it flip. A page holds 12 golfers, or 6 teams in a team event, and flips every ten seconds. If your event has flights, each flight gets its own pages. When the field is bigger than one page, a ticker scrolls the whole field along the bottom.
- Put a message on it. On the event page find the Announcement card. Type what you want people to see, such as "Frost delay — first tee moved to 9:00", and press Post. The card then says "Showing on the event page, leaderboard and TV since" and the time. Press Clear when it is no longer true.
What you should see
On our practice event, a live stroke play board showed eight golfers on one page, with the badge LIVE at the top right and the club's name at the bottom. After we posted "Frost delay - first tee moved to 9:00", a warning mark, the message and the time it was posted appeared above the board on the TV. The same message appeared above the leaderboard. We pressed Clear and it went from both.
A closed event shows FINAL. An event with 16 golfers shows "1–12 of 16" on the first page, and the ticker.
Some formats are not stroke-ranked, so the TV cannot show a leader honestly. It shows a plain panel with the event's name instead.
- Wolf. "Wolf is scored on points, not strokes — follow the live standings in the Back9Ops app."
- Skins. "Skins are won hole by hole — follow the live skins results in the Back9Ops app."
- Match Play. "Match play is decided by head-to-head results — follow the live match board in the Back9Ops app."
- Ryder Cup. "Follow the live team scoreboard on the event's Ryder Cup page or in the Back9Ops app."
For those, put the leaderboard page on the screen instead. Skins, Wolf and Match play say what each one shows.
If it goes wrong
- The TV says "Leaderboard not available". The page reads "This event may have been cancelled or hasn't started scoring yet." A Draft or cancelled event has no board. Open the event and start it.
- There is no LIVE badge on a started event. Live updates are not switched on for your club, so the TV shows the scores as they were when you opened it. Reload the page to refresh it.
- The scores stopped moving. Reload the page. If the badge says FINAL, the event is closed and the scores are final.
- The board shows no names yet. It says "No scores yet." Nobody has finished a hole. The names fill in as scores arrive.
- The wrong golfer seems to be leading. The TV is the same order as the leaderboard. Check Gross | Net and Tie Handling on the leaderboard, as in Stroke play: gross and net.
- The Announcement card is missing. It shows once the event is no longer a Draft, and only to Admins and Organizers.
- The message will not post. An empty box says "Type what you want players to see." The box stops taking letters at 280 characters, so keep it to a sentence.
- You posted a second message. One notice shows at a time, so a new one replaces the first.
Director's tip
Have the board up on the TV before the first group tees off, then walk to the far end of the room and look at it. If you can read it from there, so can everyone else, and so can the people who would otherwise come and ask you who is leading.
