I lost signal on the back nine
You are scoring with the QR code on your card and the signal drops. What the page does with your scores, what you should see when the signal comes back, and the limits.
Quick answer. Keep scoring on the page you already have open. You can keep scoring through a dead spot: when the signal drops, the page holds the scores on the phone and sends them when the connection returns. When they have gone, it says "Everything is saved." This is not a full offline mode. It only works for the card you already have open, and the director's screens and the leaderboard do not show a score until it has been sent.
Who can do this: a golfer scoring from the QR code on their card, in the phone's browser. This is about that page only. We did not walk the scorecard of a signed-in golfer, and we claim nothing about the phone app.
Before you start
The card has to be open on your phone before the signal drops. A page that is not open cannot be opened with no signal, and we did not walk scanning a code with no signal. Scoring without an account: the QR code on your card is how to open it.
The steps
- Keep scoring. Tap your scores as you always do. You do not press anything special.
- Read the line at the top. After a score is tapped with no signal, the page says "No signal. 1 score is kept on this phone and will send itself when there is signal." With a second score it says "No signal. 2 scores are kept on this phone and will send themselves when there is signal." The number goes up with each score.
- Check the hole you tapped. Under the hole there is a small line with the hole and the score, such as "Hole 2: 4 kept on this phone." The page still moves on to the next hole, so you can carry on playing.
- Leave the page open. Do not close it, and do not scan the code again until you have signal. The row with the names of your group is not on the page while the signal is down. That is normal, and it came back for us when the scores were sent.
- Wait for the signal. You do not press anything to send. When the connection returns, the page sends the scores itself. In our walk, nine seconds after the signal came back, the page said "Everything is saved."
- Check the card. Press View full card. It lists every hole. After our signal came back we scanned the code again and View full card showed the two scores we had tapped with no signal, next to the one we had tapped with signal.
What you should see
"Everything is saved." The line about the scores kept on the phone is gone. The scores are on the card.
If it goes wrong
- The page says scores "were not added". We closed the event on the demo club while a score was waiting on the phone. When the signal came back, the page said "This event is closed, so scoring is closed. 1 score on this phone was not added: Hole 4 – 5. Show this to your organizer." It also said "This scorecard is final — scores are locked." Show the page to the director.
- The line is still there when the bars are back. We did not see this one. The page can also say "N scores are kept on this phone and not sent yet. It will keep trying on its own." and "No signal. N scores are kept on this page — keep it open until it sends." We read those from the page's code. Leave the page open and wait. If it does not clear, show the page to the director.
- You closed the page while a score was waiting. We did not walk that one, so we cannot say if the score is still on the phone. Scan the code again, press Start Scoring, press View full card, and put in any hole that has a dash. You closed the page: get back to your round shows how.
- The director cannot see a score you tapped. The director's screens and the leaderboard need a connection, and a score you tapped with no signal does not show on them until it has been sent. We read that from the page's code and from the limits Back9Ops publishes for this feature. We did not look at the leaderboard in our walk.
- You have no signal and the card is not open. The page cannot be opened. Go back to where there is signal, scan the code and open the card first.
Director's tip
This one is our advice, not a rule of the app. Tell the golfers at the first tee to scan their code and open the card while they still have signal, and to leave it open on the phone in the cart. Do not close the event while groups are still on the course. A score held on a phone is refused if the event is closed first, as we saw. How scoring works on game day is what to do on your side.
