Scoring without an account: the QR code on your card

Scan the QR code on your scorecard and score your round right in your phone's browser. No account, nothing to install, and a way to keep going through a dead spot.

Quick answer. Scan the QR code printed on your scorecard with your phone's camera. It opens in your phone's web browser. You do not sign in and you do not install anything. Press Start Scoring, tap the score for each hole, then confirm your card at the end.

Who can do this: any golfer the director has handed a card to. The QR code on your card is yours. If your group plays together, your page also lists the rest of your group. Some events use one QR code on the cart sign for the whole group instead.

Before you start

The director has to open scoring first. A card scanned before then opens, but it will not let you score. You do not need an account. If you have one, Score your round on your phone is the account version.

The steps

  1. Scan the code. Point your phone's camera at the QR code on your scorecard. Press the link that appears. The page opens in your browser.
  2. Check your name. The page says "You're scoring as:" and your name. If it is not your name, ask the director for your own card. On a cart sign, one code covers the whole group, and the page says "Tap your name to start scoring". Tap your name. If your group starts on another hole, the cart sign says so ("Your group starts on hole 10").
  3. Press Start Scoring. If scoring is not open, the button says View Scorecard instead and the page says "Scoring isn't open right now. Check with your organizer." Your first hole is the hole your group starts on.
  4. Tap the score for the hole. The page shows the hole, its par, and a line about what to enter ("Stroke play — enter your gross score." in a stroke play event). For 1 to 9, tap the number. One tap saves it, and the page says "✓ Score saved". For a 10 or more, press 10+. The number shows between − and +. Set it, then press Save Score →.
  5. Keep going. If your group plays together, your page shows a row of your group's names, each with their score for this hole ("Your group has 4 players — each shows their score for this hole. Tap one to enter it:"). After a new score, the page moves to the next golfer in your group who has no score on that hole. When everyone has one, it moves to the next hole. Press Next → or ← Prev to move yourself.
  6. Fix a score. If a hole already has a score, the page says "Already entered:" and the number, with a Change button. Press it, or just tap a different number, and enter the right one.
  7. Finish the round. After the last hole the page says "Round complete!" and "All 18 holes entered."
  8. Review the card. Press View full card. You can press it at any time, not only at the end. The page says "Review your card — tap a hole to fix it". It lists Front 9 with its Out total and Back 9 with its In total, and under them the count, for example "18 / 18 holes", and your total. Tap any hole that is wrong. Press ← Back to scoring to go back to the numbers.
  9. Confirm it. Tick "I confirm these scores are correct", then press Confirm my card. Each golfer confirms their own card on their own page. Confirming yours does not confirm anyone else's.

What you should see

After you confirm, the page says "You confirmed your card", the time, and "Nice round," with your name. Confirming does not lock the card. The page tells you that you can still change a hole until the organizer finalizes the round.

If the signal drops

Keep going. If the signal drops while the page is open, the phone keeps your scores and sends them when the connection comes back. After you tap a score with no signal, a line at the top says "No signal. 1 score is kept on this phone and will send itself when there is signal." With a second score it says "No signal. 2 scores are kept on this phone and will send themselves when there is signal." Under the hole a small line such as "Hole 2: 4 kept on this phone." shows what is being held. When they have gone through, the page says "Everything is saved." In our walk that took nine seconds after the signal came back. I lost signal on the back nine has the whole walk.

Two things to know:

  • Leave the page open. It only works if the page was already open when the signal dropped. Do not close it, and do not scan the code again until you have signal. This is not a full offline mode. The row with the names of your group was not on the page while the signal was down, and it was back when the scores were sent.
  • Scores wait for a connection to show up elsewhere. The director's screens and the leaderboard show a score only once it has been sent.

If the director has closed the event or the round before your scores arrive, they are not added, and the page says which holes and "Show this to your organizer." We closed an event while a score was waiting. When the signal came back the page said "This event is closed, so scoring is closed. 1 score on this phone was not added: Hole 4 – 5. Show this to your organizer."

If it goes wrong

  • "Unable to open scorecard". The page gives the reason underneath. "This QR scoring link is not recognised. Please scan the QR code again." means the scan was cut off or the code is damaged. Try again, close to the card and in good light.
  • The link was revoked, has expired, or was for an earlier round. The page says so. The director has to give you a new scorecard. Tell them, and show them the page.
  • The event was cancelled. The page says "This event has been cancelled, so scoring is closed."
  • It says scoring is closed. "Scoring is closed right now. Your scores are saved." Ask the director to open scoring. The scores you have put in are kept.
  • "This scorecard is final". The round has been finalized and scores are locked. Ask the director if something needs to change.
  • A score is wrong. Press ← Prev, tap the hole on the review page, or press Change, and enter the right number. This works until the director finalizes the round.
  • It is not your card. Say so to the director ("Not you? Ask the organizer for your scorecard QR code.") and ask for your own.

Director's tip

Before the round, scan one of your own cards with your own phone at the first tee, and see "Start Scoring". It finds a closed round before the golfers do. How scoring works on game day is what to do on your side.
