Turn on the sign-in code
Add one extra step to your own club login. After your password, Back9Ops emails you a 6-digit code to type in. How to turn it on, what signing in looks like, and how to turn it off.
Quick answer. Open Account settings, press the Sign-in security tab and press Turn on. From then on, after your password, Back9Ops emails a 6-digit code to the address on your account and you type it in. Someone who learns your password still cannot get in without your email.
Who can do this: a club Admin or Organizer, for their own login. We walked both and both saw the Sign-in security tab. We saw no such tab on a player-only login, and this page makes no promise about players.
Before you start
You must be able to open the inbox for the email address on your account, on the device where you sign in, every time the code is asked for. If you are not sure that address is one you can always open, change it first: Your profile: email, password and your data.
The steps
- Open Account settings. In the left-hand menu, press your name, just above Sign Out.
- Press the Sign-in security tab. The card is called Extra sign-in step. It says that when this is on, signing in takes one extra step: after your password, Back9Ops emails a 6-digit code to your address and you type it in. It also has a note about the Back9Ops phone app. Read that note before you go on.
- Press Turn on. The page says "The extra sign-in step is on. Next time you sign in, we'll email you a code." and the card says "On. We'll email you a code each time you sign in on a new device."
- Sign in the next time as usual. Type your email and password and press Sign In. The page changes to Two-step sign-in, says Check your email and "We just sent a 6-digit code to" your address, with most of the letters hidden.
- Open the email called Your Back9Ops sign-in code. It says "Your code is" and the 6 digits, and "It works for a few minutes."
- Type the 6 digits in the Your code box and press Sign In. You are in.
- Optional: tick Don't ask for a code on this device for 2 weeks before you press Sign In. We saw the next sign-in on that device take the password only, with no new email.
What you should see
The extra step only shows up after the right password. A wrong password still gets the usual message. The email also says "Only you should use this code. Back9Ops will never ask you for it by phone or email."
If it goes wrong
- No email came. Look in your spam folder, then press Send a new code. The page says "A new code is on its way. Use the newest email." Only the newest code is the one to type.
- "Error: That code didn't match. Check the newest email we sent you and try again." You typed an old code or a typo. Use the newest email.
- "Please type the code from your email." or "The code is the 6 digits from your email." The box was empty, or it did not hold 6 digits.
- "Error: We've already sent you several codes in the last few minutes. Please use the newest one from your inbox, or wait a little and try again." Back9Ops limits how many it sends. Use the newest email or wait a few minutes.
- You chose "don't ask for 2 weeks" and want it asked again on this device. On Sign-in security press Ask for a code on this device again. The page says "Done. The next sign-in on this device will ask for a code."
- You want it off. On Sign-in security press Turn off. The page says "The extra sign-in step is off. Signing in is back to just your password."
- You cannot open the inbox for the address on your account. We saw no button on the sign-in page that skips the code. Email support@back9ops.com and tell us the address you signed up with. We did not walk this one, so we cannot promise what happens next.
Director's tip
This one is our advice, not a rule of the app. If several people share one club login, do not turn this on for it: the code goes to one inbox. Give each person their own account instead. Add someone to your club has the steps.
